Parent Resources

At TJ Flag Football, we value effective communication while avoiding unnecessary information overload. To help parents stay informed, we've created this Parent Resource Page with answers to frequently asked questions.

1. Practice & Game Schedule

When will my athlete practice and play games?
Schedules vary by season, with a typical season lasting six weeks plus playoffs.

  • Spring Season:
    • Practices are set by the coach and held on weeknights between 6 PM – 8 PM.
    • Practices typically last one hour.
    • Games are played on Saturdays.
  • Summer Season:
    • Practices and games occur on weeknights between 6 PM – 8 PM.
    • Practices last 45-60 minutes (coach’s discretion), immediately followed by a game.
    • This setup minimizes weekly commitments to one day (two hours total).

2. Required Equipment

Your registration fee includes an NFL Flag Jersey and flag belt.

  • Jerseys must be tucked into shorts.
  • Flag belts should be tight with excess wrapped, cut, and/or taped. Flags must stay on the player's hips!

Additional Recommended Gear:
Mouthguards – Optional but highly recommended for safety.
Cleats – Optional but help with traction on potentially slick grass fields.
Shorts without pockets – Helps prevent fingers from getting stuck when pulling flags (or tape pockets closed).
Gloves – Optional but improve grip for catching.
Water bottleRequired! Hydration is essential. A water cooler will be available on game days.
Optional safety gear: Soft-shell helmets, padded sleeves, knee guards, etc., can help prevent minor injuries.

3. Code of Conduct

We expect all coaches, spectators, parents, and athletes to:
✔️ Know, follow, and respect the rules.
✔️ Respect players, fans, referees, and referee decisions.
✔️ Prioritize safety, fun, and education over winning.
✔️ NEVER engage in unsportsmanlike conduct, including foul language or abusive behavior.
✔️ Support the teams and be a positive role model.
✔️ Use trash cans for cups, wrappers, and other waste.

4. Team Placement

How are individual players assigned to teams?

  • Players are grouped by grade and age to maintain competitive balance.
  • Buddy and coach requests are not permitted to ensure fairness.
  • Siblings in the same division are guaranteed to be on the same team.

5. Team Size

Most teams consist of 8-10 players. However, adjustments may be made if necessary.

6. Playing Time

We prioritize participation, fun, and skill development.

  • Coaches are asked to fairly distribute playing time among all players.
  • We strive to ensure equal opportunities for all athletes on the field.

7. Weather & Game Cancellations

  • How will I be notified of cancellations?
    • We will communicate cancellations via email, or Team Apps (GameChanger/Stack Team).
    • If weather conditions change suddenly, we will send an update as soon as possible.
  • What happens if a game is canceled?
    • If a game is canceled due to weather, we will attempt to reschedule when possible.
    • If rescheduling is not possible, the game may be canceled without a makeup.

8. Volunteer Opportunities

  • How can parents get involved?
    • We welcome and encourage parent participation! You can sign up to help as:
      • Coach (no experience required!)
      • Team Parent (help with communication and organizing post-game snacks with your team)
      • Game Day Volunteer (assist with setup, scorekeeping, or field cleanup)
      • Referee (Officiate the games, keep score, time and ensure fair play. Adults can do this too)
    • If interested, please reach out to [email protected]

9. League Communication

  • How will I receive updates?
    • All important league updates will be sent via email and/or Team communication apps (GameChanger/Stack Team).
    • We also post updates on our Facebook page.
